A Scholars Rock ChinaQing Dynasty, 18th century A scholars rock was used as an object of contemplation and meditation for scholars and academics in China. The rock was chosen for its form and contour, as an example of universal beauty emodied in an object. Over a process of sometimes a hundred years, the rock would undergo man made and natural alterations in order to achieve its unique shape and patina. The base is also from the original period.
